Bell Lungs / Hank Tree (solo) / mlha
The Doublet, Glasgow United Kingdom
Bell Lungs - the moniker of Scottish-Turkish vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, composer and creative facilitator Ceylan Hay. Bell Lungs takes a freewheeling, magpie attitude to ambient, noise, free improvisation, psychedelia, jazz, post-rock, minimalism and folk, creating subtly shifting sound worlds drawing on natural cycles, environmental disaster and the microcosmic aspects of relationships. Hay integrates vocals, strings, keys, tuned percussion and woodwinds into lushly textured layers and loops, however, it is her vocal mastery which is most striking, a resonant instrument acting as a conduit for the emotions, described in reviews as disarming and vaulting. Bell Lungs has performed widely across Europe and been broadcast on BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio 4, BBC 6 Music and BBC Radio Scotland, including the cult programmes Freak Zone, Freeness and Late Junction.
Hank Tree - Glasgow based project led by Fergus MacDonald (ex- State Broadcasters), also comprising Roy Shearer (Ultras, Inspector Tapehead) and Bart Owl (Eagleowl, Broken Chanter). Hank Tree's first EP was released by Chilean label Uva Robot in 2018 and a debut LP, The Big North, was released in 2022, via Olive Grove Records, which featured songs inspired by the dramatic rise and fall of prosperity of the desert region of El Norte Grande in Chile. Hank Tree's sound is characterised by fast picked classical guitars, atmospheric ballads, distortion-heavy instrumentals and hushed vocals, often incorporating field recordings and featuring lyrics focusing on social history. They have supported artists including King Creosote, Alasdair Roberts and Gwenifer Raymond and received airplay on BBC 6Music and BBC Scotland.
mlha - Ambient Dreamscape band out of Edinburgh featuring Andy Hodgkinson and Laura Meek. |
