If food waste were a country it would be the third largest emitter of greenhouse gas in the world. Surprisingly, 43% comes from individual households. Join us as we hear the personal stories of Bay Area changemakers Wanda Stewart, Paddy Iyer, and AshEL Eldridge, working on the frontline of food recovery, social equity, mutual aid, and climate change.
Guests will be inspired by these extraordinary leaders while coming away with some tips and tools to reduce food waste in their own homes and communities. About the Presenters
Affectionately known as "MamaWanda," Ms Stewart is the Executive Director of Common Vision, an organization whose mission is to provide all people with access to high quality and culturally appropriate foods. Their school orchards program is one way in which sustainable agriculture can become a tool for reversing climate change while supporting social equity. Her greatest pride is in working with students at Victory's Garden in West Oakland.
Since founding Daily Bowl in 2016, Paddy Iyer went from being a popular neighborhood coffee shop owner, to redirecting over one million pounds of edible food from landfill. His work not only reduces critical greenhouse gas emissions, but fills the hearts and homes of local residents experiencing food insecurity.
In response to the Covid 19 pandemic, AshEL Eldridge and Xochitl Moreno founded Essential Food and Medicine. Together their work serves West Oaklands most vulnerable people for free. By diverting food surplus and locally grown produce, they're building collective immunity and mending the sacred hoop by providing food and medicines for all. Their project Cob on Wood is building sustainable fireproof cob structures for Wood Street's unhoused residents, including a community kitchen, healing clinic, free commissary, shower and WCs. |
