Building Allied Behavior Through a Racial Equity Lens with Tide and Tarah Fleming for people who benefit from white privilege.

A three session affinity space for people who benefit from white privilege. This workshop will provide an opportunity to dive deeper and look at how white supremacy is working through our community.
"An affinity space is a place or set of places where people affiliate with others based primarily on shared activities, interests, and goals, not shared race, class culture, ethnicity, or gender"
White Privilege: Since white people in America hold most of the political, institutional, and economic power, they receive advantages that nonwhite groups do not. These benefits and advantages, of varying degrees, are known as white privilege. For many white people, this can be hard to hear, understand, or accept - but it is true. If you are white in America, you have benefited from the color of your skin.
If you identify as white, acknowledging your white racial identity and its privileges is a crucial step to help end racism. Facing your whiteness is hard and can result in feelings of guilt, sadness, confusion, defensiveness, or fear.
As a part of this workshop we will provide the book: Begin Again: James Baldwins America and Its Urgent Lessons for Today by Eddie S. Glaude Jr., who calls on James Baldwin to Make Sense of Today.
Glaude invites us with him to read Baldwin to the end and reveals a writer, not spent, but rather illuminating the path beyond despair the work of a saint if ever there was such a thing. This witness through the dark times, which Glaude argues are upon us once again, is, he says, the true measure of Baldwins greatness: an enduring testament to his love and the belief that the US can and must be something more than it is. The Guardian.
Since are all entering this workshop at different places on our journey to become anti-racist, we will use this book as an anchor for our discussion, so we ask that all participants read this book ahead of time.
During these sessions we will have a dedicated time for individuals to discuss personal experiences and challenges they are navigating. We invite participants to come with something prepared to discuss with the group. We will approach these interpersonal experiences with restorative practice. The intent will be to listen, not to problem solve.
Restorative approaches are all about building community and strengthening relationships. Restorative approaches are based on the idea that when we feel part of a supportive community, we respect others in that community and become accountable to it. Affinity groups can foster this sense of community through daily or weekly circles. Circles help participants better understand each other, engendering a sense of empathy and connection. Adults can build the effort by modeling collaborative, respectful behavior themselves. Adults can also have their own circles, creating a safe place where they too can connect and explore challenges.
Cost: This is a series and attendance at all sessions is required, so please make sure you sign up for all three sessions.
The true cost of this workshop is $50 per workshop ($150 for all three workshops), which allows us to continue offering programs like this one and pay trainers a fair wage for their time and expertise. Like you, our trainers work hard for change in their communities and have often developed the knowledge, skill and gifts that they are offering through many unpaid hours. Let's support them to be sustainable in their work and craft! If you can pay it forward and can afford to pay more than the true cost of the workshop series, you will be helping community members, who may not be able to pay full price.
