The symphony orchestra's strength is the beauty of the "rainbow" of sounds produced by the individual instruments, the many tonal colors that it can produce.  The first work on this concert is by the great orchestrator Rimsky-Korsakov.  His Wedding March from his "The Golden Cockerel" is quite popular and makes for a great opening for the concert.

In Les nuits d'été, Berlioz selected six poems from the volume La comédie de la mort (The comedy of death) by his close friend Théophile Gautier (1811-72). The poems consider love from different angles, but loss of love permeates them all. Our own SSO violinist Katie Bohdel will sing three selections from "Les Nuits d'Ete" or "Summer Nights".  These are beautiful songs lovingly orchestrated to great effect!

2015 marks the 150th anniversary of Finnish composer Jean Sibelius' birth. To mark that occasion, the SSO will present in the second half of this concert his First Symphony in E Minor.  This symphony is full of great tunes that are beautifully orchestrated, especially for a relatively early work.  In fact, this work is often likened to the symphonies of Tchaikovsky!
