The Time is Now: Connecting for Peace, Justice and Change

Do you know since 2010, 92 bills in 38 state legislatures have introduced bills intended to exclude American Muslims from equal protection in American courts.

Also given the ongoing contentious discussions regarding the health care reform, the continuous crisis regarding the national budget issues, shutting down of our government, the discussion concerning women's rights, religious and ethnic profiling, ongoing hate incidents and hate crimes, the Trayvon Martin-George Zimmerman verdict, it is time to change our focus from what divides us and connect on the issues that bind us.

Keynote speaker:

Shane Claiborne: The Gospel of Rutba? Hear the amazing story of kindness & compassion of Iraqi Muslims who saved lives of Americans after an auto accident in 2003 while US was bombing Iraq.

Featured speakers:

Terry Holdbrooks converted to Islam in 2004 after having nightly discussions with Muslim detainees at Guantanamo Bay after understanding their commitment to practice Islam even during their imprisonment.

Panel: Who will be left out of immigration reform?

With the passage of "The Boarder Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act", federal legislators are moving toward historic changes that will impact local and federal revenues, access to the federal safety net, families and entire communities. It is estimated that California has about 2.6 million undocumented residents, which constitutes approximately 25% of the nation's undocumented population.
How will this debate impact your Community and what would be the future of migration? How can we have humane and real immigration reform?

Workshop: "Made into America" Immigrant stories. You can share yours.

This project has a number of goals:
Compile, present and share stories related to immigration that build bridges of interest, empathy and commonality among Silicon Valley residents.

Compile, present and share stories related to immigration that generate a positive understanding of the ways that immigrants build the strength and vitality of the U.S. and the Silicon Valley area in particular.

Compile a bank of stories related to immigration that can be used in strategic ways as an educational activity or tool in classrooms, and/or a resource for policymakers, and the press.

To develop an online resource that can be a springboard for offshoot projects. These might include stories that describe an historical event through the eyes of participants, or stories focused on a particular community, neighborhood or demographic group that is facing a specific, immigrant-related challenge.

Encourage children and adults to talk to elders to record family history
Record immigrant stories to paint a picture of local history and an historical archive
Teach students interviewing and writing skills.

Panel: Income inequality and its impact on our communities, especially youth

The ongoing discussion about the widening gap between rich and poor has been loudest since the Great Depression. Warren Buffett has condemned the disparities, Occupy Wall Street movement has inveighed against it, and President Barack Obama cites it to justify higher taxes on the wealthy. Much of the debate, though, has focused on inequality's moral dimension. It just doesn't seem right that so many Americans struggle while a few prospers. What many are missing is the actual impact rising inequality is having on our communities, especially our youth.
Linette Lopez puts it in context for us "If you're at the top, and you think that widening the wealth gap doesn't affect you, let me put this gently: you are completely and totally wrong."

This comment from Richard Wilkinson, Professor Emeritus of Social Epidemiology at England's University of Nottingham, should be an embarrassment to all Americans. : "If Americans want to live the American dream, they should go to Denmark."
