A program that brings to life the sights and sounds of Versailles under the Sun King. Performed with historical and refined accuracy by one of the worlds preeminent dancers and an international band of musicians. The court of Louis XIV is widely recognized as the cradle of modern ballet. Dance was not only celebrated by the king, but was a vital part of the culture of the time, accruing political as well as artistic dimensions. Highly stylized in its steps and gestures, this lavishly elaborate dance mimics the rhythmic intensity of its richly scored music. The representational power of Baroque dance runs the gamut from portraits of mythological divinities to caricatures and comic buffoonery.
Hubert Hazebroucq, internationally acclaimed virtuoso dancer from Paris Stefan Plewniak, violin and musical leader from Poland Il Giardino dAmore, Baroque Orchestra, Vienna Kleine Kammermusik, Chamber Ensemble, Philadelphia
