Calling upon the immensity and raw power of nature, four composers bring their own perspectives to the soundscape of the nordic world. Surveying a period of over 125 years, this programme draws on themes of light, stillness, and the vast landscapes of Scandinavia. We begin with the ringing of bells  Grieg summons us to listen with a cycle of open chords reflecting the cavernous vibrations of Norwegian church bells. Turning briefly to the sublime with Anna Thorvaldsdottirs' ethereal Illumine, we return to earth with Nielsen's virtuosic Symphonic Rhapsody and the intimate and tragic Valse Triste of Sibelius. We end in flight  Sibelius's soaring Symphony no. 5, depicting the call and flight of swans throughout its finale, concludes the program.

This concert marks the LYS debut of emerging young conductor Elias Brown, noted for his adventurous programming and sensitive interpretations of music from the 20th and 21st centuries. He is joined by LYS guest conductor Philip Keller.

Edvard Grieg - Bell Ringing, op.54, no.6 "Klokkeklang"
Anna Thorvaldsdottir - Illumine (UK Premiere)
Carl Nielsen - Symphonic Rhapsody
Jean Sibelius - Valse Triste (Philip Keller, Guest Conductor)
- interval -
Jean Sibelius - Symphony no. 5 in E-flat

The London Young Sinfonia was founded as the London Youth Symphony Orchestra in 2011 by Ben Glassberg with the aim of providing an informal, but high quality orchestral playing opportunity for young musicians.  Many of the core players in the orchestra joined while still at school, and are now working professionally as orchestral musicians, or studying at post-graduate level at music college.  In order to reflect this new dynamic of the orchestra, we changed our name to the London Young Sinfonia.  Before each concert we undertake an intense burst of rehearsals, enabling us to keep the music fresh, whilst also allowing our players to maintain their other musical commitments.
