The San Francisco Art Institute is the oldest art school west of the Mississippi. A California treasure, SFAI's remarkable history-- which includes such notable faculty as Ansel Adams,
(founder of the photography department),Mark Rothko, George Kuchar, Dorothea Lange, Immogen Cunningham, Bruce Connor, Stan Brakhage and George Kuchar-- distinguishes it from local art schools like the Academy of Art or the Art Institute of San Francisco.
SFAI has had a significant impact in the world of film and can boast of such alumni as: Kathryn Bigelow (2010 Academy Award for Best Director, Hurt Locker), Peter Pau (2000 Academy Award for Cinematography, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), Richard Beggs (1980 Academy Award for Best Sound, Apocalypse Now,)Lance Accord, Peter Hutton, Jennifer Kroot (To Be Takai) and numerous others.
Join SFAI's Director of the Film Department, Christopher Coppola, and film producer Jeffrey Gliwa in celebration and continuing support of SFAI's legacy of excellence and originality in the cinematic arts, October 4, 6-8PM at Cafe Zoetrope, 916 Kearny St, San Francisco. At the event, films from past and current SFAI students will be screened, an award will be presented to an outstanding high school filmmaker, notable Bay Area film professionals will speak on the importance of film education. An exclusive sneak peak of Christopher Coppola's latest film, "Torch," which is premiering at the Mill Valley Film Festival on October 8, will be shown. Hors d'ouvres and Coppola wine will be served.
Tickets are $75 and will go directly towards purchasing a new Blackmagic Design URSA Mini Pro 4.6K Digital Cinema Camera.
