FROM MAY 26 THRU JUNE 11 PREVIEW MAY 26 OPENING NIGHT - MAY 27 EVERY WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY, FRIDAY AND SATURDAY AT 7 PM SUNDAYS AT 2 PM
The Plough and the Stars was the banner of the Irish Citizens Army during the Easter Rising of 1916. The significance of the banner was that a free Ireland would control its own destiny from the plough to the stars. Ten years later O'Casey's new play sparked off riots in Dublin. The story has been told not as in history books, but through the eyes and ears of ordinary working-class Dubliners. Always with a touch of humor, O'Casey's Dubliners, bricklayers and butchers, soldiers, wives and prostitutes are as much at war with themselves as the British. Among them are a young married couple, Jack and Nora Clitheroe. Jack is a member of the Irish Citizen Army, but Nora would prefer that he focus on his family and its welfare amid the illness, squalor and premature death that was the fate of most Dubliners. The battle that ensues is about loyalty and family and country - and the sacrifices of ordinary people to make themselves free. |
