Johnny Madison wants to bury his dog under the big white oak on the family farm. But he hasn't been home in nineteen years. Nineteen years is a long time for a dog and an even longer time for a guy to be away from home.
From the play:
Hi, I'm Joey Sapparito. That's my pizzeria. And that's the McDaniel farm. I've lived here my whole life, known the McDaniels since I was a kid. Back then, the McDaniel General Store was the center of the universe for all of us in this town. Johnston was paradise, the kind of place that slept most of the time, especially in summer, dirt roads spinning dust all over town, frogs plopping into ponds, while corn stretched itself into people's clotheslines and picket fences. We were one of those Normal Rockwell type towns, complete with Farrel's Hardware and Steven's Drugstore and soda fountain. We had a white steepled church and a red-brick school house. And we even had our own postcards. About a year ago, things got pretty crazy around here. Who knows why things happen the way they do-- what forces conspire to determine a town's fate or a man's for that matter. When you really think about it, how many human stories go untold? How much pain and triumph remains in the hearts of men, never sees the gentle light of another person's gaze. Hopefully, I can make some sense of it if I tell you what happened. |
