We are Unruly Women, part of a growing collective of William and Mary graduates looking to make excellent art into reality. Founded by Francesca Chilcote, Phi Beta Kappa and class of '11 and Laurie Wolf, Director of William and Mary Theatre. Over the years, recent graduates of the College of William and Mary work hand in hand with some of the College's best faculty to produce new, enticing works at the Capital Fringe Festival.
Following last year's dark tragedy, Santa's Helper by Cassady Kay (W&M '10), we will present Chilcote and Wolf's feminist adaptation of Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew in the 2011 Capital Fringe Festival. Shrewing of the Tamed subverts the traditional conceits of the original version, challenging gender norms and power structures by flipping the show on its head. Also, we plan on producing a short film documenting the process and development of this production.
Recipient of the William and Mary's Chappell Fellowship, Shrewing of the Tamed is the culmination of a year of research and refinement. We at Unruly Women seek to help this excellent retelling entertain and challenge theatregoers in the DC area. |
