Spanky first went on stage in 1985, in Dallas, Texas. Just fourteen months later, he was voted the Funniest Man In Texas by edging out forty other comedians to win the Texas Laff Off, sponsored by the Improvisation Comedy Club. His unconventional delivery and unique material jump-started a comedy career that has yet to slow down. Only eight months later, Spanky made his national television debut on the Arts and Entertainment Network's Good Time Cafe. This was the first of many appearances on A&E, having since been a regular on Evening At The Improv, and, appeared on Comedy On The Road with John Byner. In 1987, PBS produced a documentary, ArtsEye, featuring Spanky, to illustrate a comic's life, both on and off stage. In 1988, he began his lasting relationship with the newly formed FOX Television Network, by performing on The Late Show, hosted by Joan Rivers. Over the years he has made multiple appearances on FOX, on both Comic Strip Live and Comedy Express. Later that same year, his comedic talents were captured by Showtime Cable Television. In 1989, Spanky was invited to compete on the nationally syndicated show, Star Search, where he went on to set the record for most appearances by a comedian that season--making it all the way to the $100,000 Grand Finals. Soon after, he taped an ABC Special, George Schlatter's Comedy Club. In 1990, he made his first appearance on MTV's Half Hour Comedy Hour, as well as performing on HBO's The Comedy Channel.
From 1991 to present, Spanky has continued to make return appearances on the dozens of TV shows mentioned above. In addition, Spanky has performed at almost 400 clubs and colleges in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, and the Caribbean. He was also nominated for Campus Entertainer Of The Year in 1991.
In 1994, he became a published author with his book entitled 'MEN ARE SLUTS'--a humorous look at the male libido. In 1995, Spanky became a recording artist with the release of his comedy tape/CD, a companion piece to his book. In 1996, he made the jump from TV to the big screen, costarring in the feature film, To The Ends Of Time, for Tony Scott's production company, as well as High School High for the Zucker Brothers.
In 1997, Spanky was seen on the hit shows ER, Profiler, and the Jenny McCarthy Show. Wherever he goes he draws praise from critics, because, as the New York Daily News states, "the guy is adept at making people bust a gut." These sentiments were echoed by the Dallas Times Herald, which advises, "...he is hot as rubber boots in July. Catch him while you can!" In 1998, he joined Elizabeth Shue in the MGM feature film Molly. In addition to performing in 47 of the 50 states, Spanky made his first European Tour, with sold out shows in Sweden, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Greece, Sicily, and Crete. In 1999, Spanky was voted "1999 Comedian of the Year" by both the APCA and the Campus Activities Reader's Choice Awards. Also in 1999, Spanky made his 35th television appearance for PBS on the show "COMICS A TO Z".
He continues to make radio and TV show appearances throughout the United States while simultaneously on tour promoting the new CD: 'MEN ARE SLUTS' -The Songs. |
