Spirituals: the Sweet Songs of Slavery

Morris-Jumel Mansion
New York, NY

Sales have ended for this event.

Out of bondage came one of America's great folk arts -- the spiritual. On June 25th, at 7 p.m., historian, actress and recording artist Tami Tyree (recently heard on the soundtrack of the Oscar-winning film "12 Years a Slave") will deliver a "musical lecture" exploring the history and sounds of early African-American religious song. Using recordings, live performances and sing-alongs, Tami will take attendees on an intimate, and interactive, journey into the deep musical past, conveying in word and song the social and religious underpinnings of the spiritual as well as its foundational relationship to generations of American popular song.

Tickets are $30, $25 for members. The evening kicks off at 6:30 p.m. with a special tour of Morris-Jumel Mansion, Manhattan's oldest house and former residence of several owned slaves. The lecture begins at 7. Don't miss what's sure to be a fascinating, and moving, musical conversation.
