Black is the Color of my Voice, written by Apphia Campbell was first performed in Shanghai May 2013 where it sold-out performances internationally and received great reviews from the Shanghai community as well as critical acclaim.
Campbell uses musical inspiration from Nina Simone, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald as she depicts the life of Mena Bordeaux, an American singer experiencing the untimely death of her father. To help aid in her depression Mena visits a witch doctor who orders her to isolate herself in a room for three days. Unable to rely on cigarettes, alcohol or human contact, Mena is forced to explore her life, where she is able to find peace through her music. |
