In a turn of life imitating art, the band Raised By Swans plays
the Rivoli Backroom for the first time since their appearance on the Rivoli
stage in Atom Egoyan's latest film Chloe.
When Egoyan was looking for the perfect place to set part of what has been
called his "Toronto Lovestory" he selected The Rivoli Backroom and Canadian
band Raised By Swans to set the tone. Their appearance in the film has
introduced them to an even wider audience and ushered in their newest CD.
The band appears in support of their acclaimed new release, No Ghostless
Place. Members of the band include guitarist Alex Wright, bassist Andy
Magoffin, drummer Brady Parr, and singer-guitarist Eric Howden, who writes
all the music and lyrics for the band. Howdenstarted Raised By Swans in 1998
after leaving the band The Gandharvas.
The collaboration between Raised By Swans and Egoyan started when the
director featured three of the band's songs on the soundtrack of his movie
Adoration (2008). When looking for the perfect band to feature on the
soundtrack as well as appear within the film Chloe, he selected the London,
Ontario natives to fit the bill. This is also not the first time band has
been linked with film, Raised By Swans' song 'Violet Light' was featured in
Douglas Coupland's film Everything's Gone Green (2006).
Acclaim for Raised By Swans' No Ghostless Place:
"Beautifully constructed - and decidedly dark - musical visions" - The
Ottawa Sun
"'... The first moment of No Ghostless Place begins a journey through 13
moments of aural splendor, as themes of fading youth and fleeting love evoke
both mournful and triumphant emotions. Raised By Swans have grown from their
debut album, Codes and Secret Longing, which was enjoyable, but not even
close to their sophomore album's transcendent, angelic presence." - Exclaim!
Magazine
"More than worth the wait....No Ghostless Place shimmers with emotion and
fragile beauty. A+"- Scene Magazine
"With perfectly breathy vocals over eerie and warm guitar, Raised by Swans'
record No Ghostless Place will leave you breathless after just one listen.
The band takes time sinking their hooks into your skin. And then, without
warning, they rip them out in a swell of emotion and well-crafted lyrics."-
Tyler Ostermayer, The Weal
