PEILING KAO DANCES and UH Faculty String Quartet present "Images From the Dark Land", an evening of avant-garde performance.

"Images From the Dark Land" was inspired by George Crumbs master piece "Black Angels - Thirteen Images from the Dark Land". Crumb composed this piece for electric string quartet in 1970, as a reference to the Vietnam War. Peiling Kao, the artistic director of PEILING KAO DANCES created her choreographic response to look into the war, refugees, and the idea of American dream from the past to present time.

Another piece "Cover Your Mouth When You Smile" will be presented in the program. Premiered in June 2018 at ODC theater, San Francisco, "Cover Your Mouth When You Smile" is a movement essay that explores racial melancholia, the myth of the model minority, and mimicry in contemporary Asian immigrant cultures. It is a collaborative trio, choreographed and performed by choreographer Gerald Casel, Na-Ye Kim and Peiling Kao. With Casel and Kim's permission, Kao re-arranged this trio and will perform it as a solo in the evening.
