In Jack's Hat, writer and performer, Charles Van Eman, portrays four distinct and individually drawn characters. Although each is separated in time and station, their lives are connected in surprising waysthrough a hata hat with bullet holes and history. As their stories unfold, we see how each man tries to know, and do, the right thing. Through their successes and failures, we understand the threads of humanity that unite us in a common experience.
Charles Van Eman brings a vast depth and breadth of experience to his one-man show.  His numerous acting credits include stage, film (96 Minutes, The Joneses, Riddle) and television (CSI Miami, Vampire Diaries, Reckless,  Chasing Life, The Colbys, Days of Our Lives, and All My Children, ). Up next for Charles is Sea of Trees with Matthew McConaughey, directed by Gus Van Sant. Charles has published two novels, On the Way to Pomona and The Weight of Loss.
Original music by Matthew Bernstein. Jack's Hat runs with no intermission. There is adult content.
This Stage Three Workshop Production is made possible by a generous grant from Friendship Foundation.
At TASN, The Stage Three Workshop Production Series is a professional theater laboratory experience designed to promote the development of new works. In 2010, Jack's Hat was presented in our theatre as a staged reading by the North Shore Readers Theatre Collaborative (NSRTC), qualifying it to be considered for Stage Three. A workshop production is a full-scale production in terms of sets, costumes, lighting, and staging. Workshop productions are an integral step for the playwright in completing the piece before it makes its actual premier.
Venues like TASN are vital for the development of new plays and introduction of new work into mainstream theater.
The process: The director and cast work with the playwright during the rehearsal period, refining and trimming the play. Set and lighting design often become integral to the defining and refining of a new play as well. The purpose of such a production is to get a new play on its feet in a physical setting to see what works and what doesn't. Finally, a play isn't complete until it is presented to an audience.
