Civic Theatre
Nelson, BC

Sales have ended for this event.

Two incredible films from Canada and Italy share stories rarely spoken. From the creators of The Clean Bin Project, Vancouver filmmakers Jen Rustemeyer and Grant Baldwin pass through Nelson quite often to visit friends and family and its an honour to launch the Civic Theatre portion of the Festival with this wonderful film  well-suited for the whole family.

Following Just Eat It, stay for the 9:00 film  The Last Shepherd  a story filled with heart and imagination. "The film evokes a meditative experience and the relationship between people, animals and society is told with remarkable grace," says Jon Steinman.

7pm
Just Eat It (Canada, 2014, 75 minutes): We all love food. As a society, we devour countless cooking shows, culinary magazines and foodie blogs. So how could we possibly be throwing nearly 50% of it in the trash? Vancouver filmmakers and food lovers Jen Rustemeyer and Grant Baldwin dive into the issue of waste from farm, through retail, to the back of their own fridge. After catching a glimpse of the billions of dollars of good food that is tossed each year in North America, they pledge to quit grocery shopping and survive only on discarded food. What they find is truly shocking. Official Docs for Schools Selection, 2014 Hot Docs

9pm
The Last Shepherd (Italy, 2012, 76 minutes): In this beautiful and touching documentary, Renato Zucchelli, the last shepherd in Lombardi, Italy, hopes to share the wonders of his work by parading his flock into nearby Milan. Renato is the last man to tend sheep in the region of Lombardy, an area increasingly overrun by urban sprawl. Although blessed with family and friends, Renato has a dream: to introduce the children of Milan to the all-but-forgotten joys of his profession. With his comrade Piero in tow, Renato brings his flock to the center of the city, where the intersections and espresso stands lie wholly unprepared. Melding reality with flights of fancy, director Marco Bonfanti's film is an utterly charming concoction, with gorgeous scenery and a beautiful soundtrack providing the trimmings to this modern Don Quixote tale. Enchanting as the developing journey becomes, however, the irresistible main draw remains Zucchelli himself, a giant of a good-humored man whose ebullience spills over the borders of wherever his fairy tale mission takes him. Funny, touching, and ultimately thought-provoking, The Last Shepherd is a warmly endearing portrait of a man who conquers a city with nothing more than the power of imagination.
