Bet Midrash Series: Let It GoThe Personal, Environmental, and Spiritual Practice of Shmita

Lev Shalem Institute of the Woodstock Jewish Congregation
Woodstock, NY

Sales have ended for this event.

The Jewish year 5775 (2014-15) is a Shmita year, also known as a Sabbatical year. Shmita means to release, to let go. The Torah tells us that every seventh year we are to give the land a rest from cultivation, and we are to release debts that are owed to us. The Sabbatical year is an opportunity to reset our relationship to our environment, to the economy, and to ourselves.

This ancient Jewish directive to live in balance with, and reverence for, the land and each other has never been more relevant. In this class we study and reflect on these teachings, and we think creatively and collaboratively about ways that our communities might honor the Sabbatical year through our own collective action. Participants in this series will have a "study buddy" with whom to share some assignments  both text-based and heart-based  in between classes.

This is a 6-part weekly series, meeting Tuesdays from 6:30-8pm on 10/21, 10/28, 11/4, 11/11, 11/18, and 11/25.
