In the early 1800's thousands of immigrants take up the tremendous task of digging a ditch 563 miles through primitive forests, swamps, and the wilderness of New York State. The play is staged at the site where the Erie Canal was completed in 1825, one of the most historical sites in the nation. The stirring location of the play makes one feel they are in a time capsule of early America.
In l817 DeWitt Clinton, the Governor of New York is challenged to construct the Erie Canal. His enemies work to stop him with hostile and brutal attacks. At the same time 9000 ditch diggers have to fight their own wars
In the midst of the battle to conquer the wilderness of New York two young immigrant ditch diggers find romance among their own battles to survive the harsh world of the making of America.
Clinton's Ditch is an original play written by Screenwriter Anne Porter Paris and writer Hugh Pratt. |
