Molissa Fenley and Company present a one-night only concert featuring three works:
The New York premiere of Redwood Park, (part 1, recently commissioned by The Oakland Ballet and premiered on May 16th) with an original percussion score by Joan Jeanrenaud recorded by Nava Dunkelman and Anna Wray. Two of the dancers, Evan Flood and Matthew Roberts, who performed the work at its premiere, join Company members Christiana Axelsen and Rebecca Chaleff to present the work here. Molissa has just completed part 2 that will receive its premiere at this performance, with music composed and performed live by Erin Gee.
Also on the program - Esperanto (1985), one of Molissa's most beautiful group dances. Set to an original score by Ryuichi Sakamoto, the remounting of Esperanto continues Molissa's recent interest in reprising dances created early in her career. As suggested by the title, the progressive idea of a universal language was a starting point for a work noted for its shifting dynamics and complex rhythmic and spatial designs.
The third work on the program, Dance an Impossible Space, was created while Molissa was in residency at the Bogliasco Foundation in Genoa, Italy this past December 2013. Originally choreographed in a small dance studio, the piece explores a trajectory of movement within tight constraints. |
