"LET FREEDOM RING: THE RESOUNDING MUSIC OF AFRICAN AMERICAN COMPOSERS"

Eastside College Preparatory School, Performing Arts Center
East Palo Alto, CA

Sales have ended for this event.

Eastside College Preparatory School extends a warm invitation to the community to attend the fifth annual benefit concert featuring music by African American composers, performed by the musicians and guest artists of the African American Composers Initiative (AACI.) All proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the school.

The AACI musicians, joined by the Eastside Choir under the direction of David Chaidez, will present the premier of "Ruby." This multi-media work by Dr. Valerie Capers tells the story of six-year-old Ruby Bridges who courageously triumphed over the ordeal she faced when she integrated the schools of New Orleans in 1960, and in doing so, changed the course of a nation.  Gifted young composer Joshua McGhee has written a piece entitled "Elegy for a Child", that will be presented along with songs by William Grant Still and Regina Baiocchi, in a trilogy tribute to the memory of Trayvon Martin.

The program will include settings of traditional spirituals by Florence Price and Margaret Bonds, an instrumental trio by Still, piano solos by Price and Still, piano duets by Robinson, and jazz songs and instrumentals arranged by pianist Capers and bassist  Robinson.

Last year's audience gave an enthusiastic standing ovation to Robinson's rendition of "Bye Bye Blackbird" on sopranino recorder. Capers on piano joins Robinson on recorder once again for what promises to be an unforgettable performance of "Precious Lord."

Following the concert, we invite the entire audience to join the musicians and composers for refreshments and the opportunity to meet one another.
