Just a few blocks northeast of downtown Raleigh the state capital; you will be transported back in time to the late 19th century. Walking along the tree lined streets your personal tour guide will point out houses and events of interest. The Oakwood Historic District area reflects homes built in the Queen Anne style with a touch of the Victorian and of course our southern accent.
By the 1890s, Oakwood had become a fashionable suburb with paved Belgian stone from Wake County granite. Thanks to the hard work of the good folks of the "Society for the Preservation of Historic Oakwood".
Most of the homes have been lovingly restored to their original state, with steep slate roofs and a rich palette of paint colors. See the home in Oakwood where Gregory Peck and Lauren Bacall filmed a Hollywood movie (Peck's last movie). Learn the stories of days past of a merchant class neighborhood and its residents.
Meet at NW corner of Burke square near historic marker for mansion. Corner of E. Lane & n. Blount streets.
The Historic Oakwood tour has a minimum of 8 guests and a maximum of 15 guests. Wear comfortable shoes and clothes.
This is a walking tour comprising approximately 2 miles over 90 minutes. Contact us at (919) 371.2653 or email trtservice@tobaccoroadtours.com |
