Charles Condomine needs to learn about the occult for a novel he is writing. As part of his research, he asks an eccentric medium, Madame Arcati, to hold a séance at his house. During the seance, Madame Arcati unknowingly summons the very active spirit of Charles's first wife, Elvira. Only Charles can see or hear Elvira and often seems to be talking to thin air. His second wife, Ruth, does not believe that Elvira exists and starts to wonder about her husbands sanity. Elvira, still in love with Charles, makes several unsuccessful efforts to break up his marriage to Ruth. Elviras final ploy backfires in a particularly spectacular manner that end us complicating everyones lives - temporal and spiritual! |
