Arching Back, Reaching Forward

ConneXions students will take you on a journey through the ages. Starting in Senegal West Africa, moving through the abolition of slavery in America, the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements, the election of our first Black President, and finally returning to the coast of Goree Island 300 years later, you will come away with a new perspective on the cultural legacy of African Arts in America. Before and after your journey you can indulge in authentic Senegalese cuisine, enjoy exceptional student artwork and purchase artwork, prints and merchandise that will support the ConneXions Art Department.

This event is to help students from ConneXions fund their journey to Senegal in June 2017 with our resident Griot and West African Percussion educator, Medoune Gueye (aka Papa Dame). For two weeks students will live in the popular village of Petit Mbao, explore the past through traditional ceremonies, and experience Senegal's Historical Landmarks. Through an educational exchange with students from Mariama Ba Boarding School on Goree Island, students will also gain new insights about their own history and culture. A visit to Senegals largest university, Universite Cheikh Anta Diop, and a celebratory festival of the arts in Mboa will make this an unforgettable and life-giving trip.
