A Christmas Celebration with the Holst Singers

St Paul's Church, Covent Garden
London United Kingdom

Sales have ended for this event.

The Holst Singers will return to St Paul's Covent Garden on Friday 9th December 2016 for a feast of Christmas choral music in support of the charity Breathing Matters. Featuring well-known, traditional carols, as well as more contemporary Christmas music, the concert promises to be an evening of wonderful festive entertainment, all for a terrific cause.

The Holst Singers are one of Britain's foremost choirs, described by the BBC as a "leading chorus on the international stage". With the support of their President, James Bowman, and Musical Director, Stephen Layton, the choir has developed its interest in exploring new and neglected works as well as core choral repertoire. In concert the choir is renowned for dramatic and engaging performances, described by The Times as "interactive concert going at its most revelatory".
"The Holst Singers sing with a spell bounding sense of atmosphere and crystal-clear textures......supremely musical" (BBC Music Magazine).

As well as the Holst Singers there will be readings by the well known BBC presenters Nigel Rees and John Sergeant. Nigel Rees is a writer and broadcaster who has been presenting Radio 4's Quote...Unquote for 40 years; John Sergeant was a political correspondent for the BBC and ITV and has worked on a wide variety of other programmes, including comedy shows, documentaries, and Strictly Come Dancing.

Breathing Matters (University College London Hospitals charity) supports research at University College London into lung diseases. The proceeds from the concert will specifically fund research into Bronchiectasis and raise awareness of this relatively common but poorly understood chronic lung disease. The main symptom of Bronchiectasis is recurrent chest infections and patients with severe disease may also have problems with their breathing due to the chronic lung damage. Bronchiectasis affects an estimated 100,000 people in the UK and unfortunately there is no cure. Breathing Matters funds research work at University College London by doctors and scientists into why people develop Bronchiectasis and how to best manage the chronic lung infections.

Tickets will be available from brown paper tickets until the evening of 8th December. Subject to availability, tickets will be on sale on the door from 6.45pm on the night of the concert (9th December). The concert begins at 7.30pm. Wine and soft drinks will be available from 6.45pm.
