VOICES FROM THE LONG WAR is a true story told by veterans and refugees. It reveals their lived experience in Iraq and Afghanistan and traces how both veteran and refugee strive to return homeor build a new onein an America removed from the war.

The bond formed between our volunteer cast of veterans and refugees is an essential part of this story. Some of our participants will head straight to work after rehearsal.
We are seeking donations for shared meals during our rehearsal process. Providing meals for our team of veterans, refugees, and drama professionals will go a long way toward building the community that will help them tell their stories in performance.

Since 2008, The Telling Project has been working with veterans and veterans family members to create performances in which these individuals speak directly to their communities about life in the military. VOICES FROM THE LONG WAR, The Telling Projects 39th production nationwide will extend and deepen this work, working for the first time with a cast composed both of US military veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, and of Iraqi and Afghan refugees individuals whose work with the American military necessitated their seeking asylum in the US. All participants in VOICES FROM THE LONG WAR are current New Haven area residents, and all will be performing their own stories.
VOICES FROM THE LONG WAR is an opportunity to engage the New Haven community area in an unprecedented conversation concerning the recent wars, providing varied, complex and often conflicting perspectives on these conflicts, offering insight that is detailed and human, and bringing the impact of these distant events home to the New Haven community. VOICES FROM THE LONG WAR will be the end result of an intensive performance-making process, including interviews, transcription collaborative scripting and performance devising and rehearsal. |
