Project Censored cordially invites you to attend the Media Freedom Summit: Celebrating 40 Years of Project Censored, to be held at Sonoma State University on October 21-22, 2016. The summit will be an opportunity for students, faculty, and community members to identify and address crucial threats to media freedom, to learn about and share effective strategies for advancing media freedom, and to promote critical media literacy education in service of social justice and positive, meaningful change in local communities and larger society. Registration and summit information will be available at ProjectCensored.org starting March 1, 2016.
In addition to providing informative and inspiring break-out sessions and practical, hands-on workshops, a major aim of the summit will be to engage all participants in contributing to a working document that will identify the most important actions necessary to protect and expand media freedom in the United States and around the world.
The Media Freedom Summit will also include an awards ceremony to celebrate educators and investigative journalists who embody Project Censoreds ideal of Media Democracy in Action. One highlight of the awards ceremony will be the establishing of the Carl Jensen Award. Carl Jensen, who taught Sociology and Communications at Sonoma State, created Project Censored in 1976. Forty years on, his vision continues to inspire and inform the Projects work of engaging students and the public about the crucial links among a free press, democracy, and human rights. The Carl Jensen award will celebrate the living legacy of his work by recognizing educators whose teaching and research break new ground in the pursuit of a truly free press in service of robust democracy.
The summit will also witness the official launch of the Global Critical Media Literacy Project (GCMLP). The GCMLP provides pedagogy and curricular models for educators working in a variety of disciplines. The GCMLP empowers students with meaningful learning and an educational pathway from junior college to graduate school and opportunities for civic engagement in their communities. A number of the summits sessions and workshops will highlight how interested faculty, students, and members of the public can join in the GCMLPs collaborative mission. Both the GCMLP and the Media Freedom Summit are co-sponsored by ACME, the Action Coalition for Media Education; Sacred Heart Universitys Media Literacy and Digital Culture Program; and Project Censored.
