The Manchester Free Walking Tours
No booking necessary; just show up at the meeting point.
Informative and entertaining tours on a tips-only basis.
The Tour is approximately 3-hours in length.
11am, Alan Turing Statue (Sackville Gardens), Tuesday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday.
This free tour is the perfect introduction to this incredible city for students, tourists and locals alike. Through the tour, we will tell the story of two Manchester's.
Industrial Manchester was a city of firsts: the first canal and the first railway station; the first punch of the suffragette movement and the founding of trade unionism. This is the city in which Marx and Engels wrote the communist manifesto, and ordinary Mancs helped bring about the abolishment of slavery.
'Madchester' is a very different story: after a damaging Manchester blitz and an even more damaging decline in industry, swaggering Mancs in the shadows of empty warehouses gave birth to the rave and 24-hour party culture, the gig that started punk and the richest football club and the most popular football club (they're not the same club).
The tour is approximately 3 hours and includes:
Royal Exchange Theatre Albert Square and Manchester Town Hall Midland and Britannia Hotel IRA Bomb World's Biggest Room Vimto Monument The Manchester Blitz Free Trade Hall Sex Pistols 1976 gig Factory Records and The Hacienda The Suffragette Movement Underground Secret Manchester Manchester Art Gallery Peterloo Massacre Warehouse Palaces and much more. |
