San Jose vocalist / saxophonist Danny Hull and friend bassist Bob Boehm started the group that would eventually become Danny Hull & Spang-A-Lang in December 1980 at Lord John's Inn in Santa Clara, CA. Owner Joey Antuzzi gave the group a Wednesday night slot that lasted for several years and allowed the band to attract a large following of local fans. The very first performance featured Danny Hull, Bob Boehm, Ron E. Beck and Russ Ferrante along with Mike Renwick who sat in on guitar. Russ Ferrante subsequently joined Robben Ford's band in Los Angeles and was replaced by Steve Czarnecki and the permanent drum chair was filled first by Bob Blankenship, then Gaylord Birch, then David Mead and finally Ron E. Beck (former Tower Of Power member) who added his super funky drumming & vocal abilities, a huge benefit to the overall group sound.

Spang-A-Lang's vocal capability was further expanded with the addition of master vocalist Tony Lindsay who had just relocated to California from Kingston, NY. Tony began sitting in with the band at Bourbon Street, a restaurant run by Bob Clark at the Old Mill shopping center in Mt. View, CA just below radio station KPEN. The radio station would drop a live microphone down into the restaurant and the band performed live on the air, attracting a much wider audience including Ronnie Lott and other members of the San Francisco 49er's! When Tony joined the group, the name "Spang-A-Lang" was chosen and the band began working even more frequently.

As Spang-A-Lang developed original musical material, an album was recorded and plans were made to enter a "battle of the bands" in Oakland, CA. Spang-A-Lang won that battle! The prize was a paid-for recording (which was never completed due to fraudulent behavior on the part of the prize committee) but the band continued to record more original music, some of which was released on cassette tape. Danny Hull left the group in 1985 to work with Clifford Coulter & The Doobie Brothers and the band continued to perform with several other new members and still works today with leader Tony Lindsay fronting the band when he is not on the road as a lead singer with Carlos Santana.

It is difficult to believe that 35 years have passed since that first night in December 1980 at Lord John's Inn when Spang-A-Lang was born. To celebrate this important anniversary, a 35th year reunion of the band's five original members at Little Lou's BBQ in Campbell, CA will celebrate the long and successful run of a group of great musicians that attracted great popularity during the 1980's and are still active today.
