Corie and Paul are newlyweds, fresh from their honeymoon. Corie is still enthralled by her recent sexual awakening and the adventure that comes with youth and marriage. She wants their passionate romantic life to continue at full speed. Paul, however, feels it is time to focus on his burgeoning career as an up-and-coming lawyer. When they don't see eye-to-eye about their apartment, their neighbors, and their sex drive, the new marriage experiences its first patch of rough weather.
Neil Simon's "bubbling, rib-tickling comedy" (The New York Times) playfully explores the growing pains of young romance amid the hilarious results of mismatched good intentions. Barefoot in the Park brims with quick-witted dialogue and fast-moving banter, sweeping audiences along for a wild ride with the newlyweds you can't help but love.
As the American work-life balance has become increasingly difficult to sustain, Simon's poignant play reminds us to pause, breathe, and appreciate those we love. In an ever-competitive society centered on meeting deadlines and accelerating plans, no satisfactory substitute has emerged for time spent with friends and family. Advanced technology has enabled constant connectivity to the workplace and challenges to the separation between career and personal life. The prioritization of work, while necessary to an extent, has led to the sacrifice of healthy, fulfilling relationships and personal happiness. As Simon's characters note, spontaneity is a necessary component of life strategy. Their struggles and realizations reflect the truth that our identities are just as much a reflection of our present situations as they are of our future goals and ambitions. Why not take a moment to embrace the joy of now and run "barefoot in the park"?
