The Institute for South Asia Studies at UC Berkeley is proud to announce that the internationally renowned tabla virtuoso, Zakir Hussain is the UC Berkeley Regents' Lecturer for Spring 2015.
Zakir Hussain is one of the foremost percussionists of the contemporary world, not only of Indian classical music but also of jazz and world music. As a player and composer he is a brilliant example of border crossing music. Widely considered a chief architect of the contemporary world music movement, he has historic collaborations to his name, including Shakti, which he founded with John McLaughlin and L. Shankar, the Diga Rhythm Band, Making Music, Planet Drum with Mickey Hart, and recordings and performances with artists as diverse as Joshua Redman, George Harrison, Joe Henderson, Van Morrison, Jack Bruce, Tito Puente, Pharoah Sanders, Billy Cobham, the Hong Kong Symphony and the New Orleans Symphony. He has been hailed by media as a virtuoso, a superstar and an encyclopedia of tabla.
SFJazz Sessions is a record of four extraordinary nights (and days) in March, 2013, showcasing Zakir Hussain's formidable talents and the genre-bending collaborations which have characterized his career. Recorded during the historical inaugural season of the San Francisco Jazz Center, the film highlights the consummate virtuosity, improvisational genius and easy, personable charisma which have made Hussain an international celebrity. The presentation of the music is interwoven with insightful interviews, personal commentary and intimate glimpses of life, offstage and backstage, of the phenomenal artists who came together during the sessions. Performances include appearances by Bela Fleck (banjo), Edgar Meyer (bass), Steve Smith (drums), Giovanni Hidalgo (conga), Eric Harland (drums), Ganesh Rajagopalan (violin), Rakesh Chaurasia (flute), Niladri Kumar (sitar), George Brooks (saxophone), Molly Holm, Osam Ezzeldin, Antonia Minnecola, Dana Pandey, Sanket Acharya and Salar Nader. The documentary has been directed by Anisa Qureshi and Taylor Phillips. |
