2018 is the 100-year anniversary of the final year of the Great War, so we are pleased to bring you some of the words and music popular at the time, in the parlours of home and in the trenches, many of which will be instantly familiar to today's audience. We will also be including a number of well-known songs of remembrance, including more recent tributes to those who gave their lives in that 'war to end all wars'.
Led by members of the Fenham Ensemble, they will be joined by Dame Allan's Schools' chamber choir, also based in Fenham, together with some special guests.
There will be stories and poems from around the time of the Great War, originally published in Punch magazine and the Wipers Times, reflecting the moods of the time both at home and at the Front, and incorporating plenty of that unique wartime humour - a vital safety-valve for so many in a time of unimaginable horror and loss of life.
This event raises money for the provision of a bench of Remembrance in the Memorial Garden at the side of St James' and St Basil's Church in Fenham, to provide a small sanctuary for those wishing to remember those who gave their lives. |
