Helsinki sees more world-class roller derby stars on Saturday May 14th when the amazing New Skids on the Block parade their tricky wares in Bunkkeri for up to 30 advanced and 30 intermediate skaters. Also 20 spots reserved for off-skate participants.

So MayDay in HEL is not only watching awesome derby from the stands but honing your own technical and tactical mastery on the track as well. Up your game and stun your opponents-to-be with new skills from across the Pond.

Ticket for bootcamp + Sunday ticket to MayDay in HEL tournament also gives you free admission to watch Saturday's games in Jäähalli!

Hold up, the Neon ladies are here! The New Skids on the Block are a most beloved team in the WFTDA since they introduced themselves to the world in 2009, at Champs in Philadelphia, by performing a dance number as a half-time show. Since then, they have accumulated the honors. Montreal was the first non-American league to become a member of the WFTDA in 2009. The Skids were the first non-American team to qualify for Playoffs in 2010, and have qualified every year since then. They were also part of the first WFTDA-sanctioned tournament in Europe, Anarchy in the UK, in 2011. Never ranked outside the worldwide top 20, they have played every major team there is. These ladies know their derby inside and out.

Requirements for Skill levels:

Skaters should be advanced or intermediate level. Skating skills can be measured in many levels, but we will look for following criteria: - WFTDA minimum skills are passed - you can skate backwards easily. ADVANCED skater has minimum one season of national series or similar experience. INTERMEDIATE skater has five games or five scrimmages and at least one game.

Session outlines:

1. Intermediate (focuses more on individual skills)
1. 1 Positional blocking
- In this class you will learn:
How to keep your body in front of the jammer while using footwork like: T- step, swoop and catch and the importance of anticipating the jammers movement, pre-empting not reacting.
1.2 Jammer tricks
- In this class you will learn:
How to juke, to make blockers react first, to be efficient even if your patient, to use your toe stop, your edge and some quick feet. You will also learn how to take hits and maintain momentum while controlling your body.
1.3 Using the track at your advantage
- In this class you will learn:
How to use the track's momentum and physics to your advantage particularly when blocking alone or in pairs.

2. Advanced (focuses more on team strategy)
2.1 Offensive targeting play
- In this class you will learn:
How to deliver effective hit on your opponent and where you should be on the track. How to use effective clear or screen depending on the situations.
2.2 Resetting your formation
- In this class you will learn:
What to do when the other team disturbs your blocking formation? Learn how to keep blocking together in a chaotic pack, and learn tricks for getting back together when things get out of control.
2.3 Being a good jammer for my team
- In this class you will learn:
How to come into the pack without disturbing my team. How to start on a power less jam and how to help your team when you are low on blockers.
2.5 Formations strategy
- In this class you will learn:
How to effectively use team formation depending on your position on the track. A brace wall, a tripod or a wheel.
